Cycad Zoo

A Conservation Campaign

Cycads have been around since the age of the dinosaurs. Today, they face complex threats towards their conservation. Collaborating with scientists from the Cal Academy of Science in San Francisco, I created original merch designs for a Kickstarter campaign designed to raise funds to contribute to their conservation.

Inspired by their ancient history, we designed graphics of 5 unique cycad species and paired them each with a different dinosaur. These vector illustrations feature the cycads and dinos in ancient scenes, giving us a variety of possibilities for merch ideas to raise funding, from digital screensavers to prints. We also used the individual graphics of each cycad and dino design for stickers, pins, and more.

Landscapes

These are the 5 final landscape designs that incorporate the dinosaurs within environments featuring each unique cycad species. These were created in a square format, with details designed mindfully to work well when cropped in either portrait or landscape in order to function as downloadable screensavers for either desktop or mobile.

Cycads and Dinos

Here are the individual assets of each dinosaur and cycad, which were used to create the physical merch of pins, stickers, buttons, and more.

Concept Design

Here you can see some of my sketches and progress details from the early stages of the project. Concepts were created using vertical and horizontal guidelines on the square layout to ensure the compositions worked well when cropped to different proportions.
